Kantha is an incredibly old technique that originated in Bangladesh and West Bengal. It was made from sarees and other garments that were no longer wearable. "Kontha" is a Sanskrit word meaning "rags".
The prints in this collection are derived from Valori Wells' hand-carved blocks she uses to created stamped, block-printed fabrics. These hand-stamped fabrics are then screen printed in India, cut and pieced together. They are then hand-stitched by skilled artisans who are versed in the traditions of Kantaha. The talented women earn a fair wage for their skills.
The piecing in this fabric is not a print design, these very special fabrics are actually pieced!!
